A Hamilton school and the wider Waikato sporting community are in mourning following the sudden death of 15-year-old student and gifted athlete Bhavreen Kaur.

The Hillcrest High School student, who died on Monday from what Squash Waikato has confirmed was a medical event, is being remembered as a multi-talented sportswoman and a cherished member of her school community.

Bhavreen was a prominent player in both squash and hockey, representing several clubs and earning a reputation as a determined and passionate competitor. Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from friends, teammates, and local sports organisations.

Bhavreen was multi-talented, exceptional in the classroom and an absolute athlete in her chosen fields of sport. Bhavreen was well-loved by the local squash community and as the captain of the hockey 1st XI her teammates will tell you she was a strong competitor.

In a statement, the school said Bhavreen had been "quickly adored by her peers and teachers" since she started in Year 9.

Squash Waikato, where Bhavreen was recognised as one of the region’s "top junior squash girls", joined other organisations including the Golden Heritage Empowerment Trust, Te Aroha Squash Club, Hamilton Youth Club, and the World Squash Development Organisation in paying tribute to the young athlete.

In a collective statement, the groups remembered her as "determined, hardworking and a pleasure to be around on and off court."

"Your memories will live on in the hearts of your teammates, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing you," the tribute said. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to your parents, family, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

Hamilton’s Lugton Park Rackets Club also shared its condolences online, writing: "Our thoughts are with Bhavreen’s family at this time. A sad loss for the club".

Tributes from the community

The loss of a young person in such a sudden manner is a profound shock for any community. For the tight-knit worlds of high school sports, the impact is particularly acute. Teammates are not just fellow players; they are friends who share goals, victories, and defeats, building strong bonds through hours of practice and competition. The captain of a team often serves as a mentor and a leader, making the loss of Bhavreen, who captained the 1st XI hockey team, even more deeply felt by her teammates who looked to her for guidance and inspiration. This sense of community and shared grief is a recurring theme in Hamilton, a city that has previously come together to remember those lost under tragic circumstances. The collective mourning underscores the importance of support networks within schools and local clubs during times of immense difficulty, as seen when a damaged school track was recycled into new LA Metro walkways.

Support services are often mobilised in such situations to help students and staff navigate their grief. Organisations like Youthline and other mental health services provide crucial resources for young people coping with loss. Hillcrest High School, a coeducational state school in south-eastern Hamilton, is focused on supporting its students and staff through this challenging period.

A private service for Bhavreen was held in Hamilton on Wednesday afternoon.
